Epsom Salt & Baking Soda Bath

You’ve been gardening all-day or overdone it at exercising and your muscles are sore.  Perhaps you’ve had a stressful day at work and everything feels tight and tired.  One of the easiest and most relaxing ways to get relief from sore muscles is a simple Epsom Salt with Baking Soda Bath.


Epsom salts aren’t really a salt at all but rather another name for magnesium sulfate, which is an important mineral that can be hard to obtain in our diet but easily administered through the skin.  According to the Epsom Salt Industry Council, a simple soak is beneficial to heart and circulatory health, can lower blood pressure, helps ease muscle pain and eliminates harmful substances from the body.  It also improves nerve function by encouraging proper regulation of electrolytes.


Adding baking soda to your bathing water is mostly for detoxing purposes and helps your body unload extra toxins that might be making you sore.  It is especially good for detoxing you from environmental radiation such as x-rays and airport screenings. 


Simply run a hot bath (no more than 100 degrees) and add 2 cups Epsom salts and 2 cups baking soda.  In addition you can add a few drops of your favorite essential oil, like lavender or chamomile, for an even more luxurious and therapeutic experience.  Optionally, you can find Epsom salt on the market that already contains essential oil fragrances to soothe and ease your sore muscles.


Soak for 20 – 45 minutes or until the bath water begins to cool.  It is a good idea to do this just before bed as this bath can make you very sleepy.  Side effects include relaxed body and mind.
