Castor Oil Packs for Pain

One of my favorite remedies for pain is the use of castor oil packs, which dates back to Ancient Egypt and was wildly touted by the prophet Edgar Cayce.  Today, Chinese Medicine, Ayurveda Medicine and Naturopathy all recommend castor oil packs for their ability to promote healing and reduce inflammation.  The packs can also improve circulation of the lymphatic system.

Centuries ago the plant was referred to as “Palma Christi” because the leaves were said to resemble the hand of Christ.  Castor oil comes from the Castor seed, Ricinus communis, which has very unique fatty acids that are thought to be responsible for the plant’s healing abilities.

Although wonderful for muscle aches and pain, the brilliance of castor oil packs is that they work great for all kinds of other conditions that might cause pain, such as fibroids, ovarian cysts, swollen joints, irritable bowel syndrome, digestive disorders, and congested livers.   Really the list is endless, if you have pain – apply a castor oil pack.

Additionally, when applied topically, castor oil packs can also help with a variety of skin conditions like keratosis, dermatitis, wound healing, acne, ringworm, warts, sebaceous cysts, itching and other skin infections.

So here’s what you will need to make your own castor oil packs:

  1. High Quality cold-pressed castor oil
  2. A hot water bottle or heating pad
  3. Plastic wrap
  4. A piece of wool or cotton flannel, large enough to cover the affected area when folded in half
  5. Towel

Once you have gathered all your materials soak the flannel or wool in the castor oil to completely saturate it.  Place the soaked material over your affected area and cover with plastic wrap.  Lay your hot water bottle or heating pad on top of the plastic and cover everything with a towel to hold in the heat.  Leave pack in place for 60 minutes or longer.

When done, you can wash the oil off your skin and clean everything up.  I recommend saving your soaked material in a zip lock bag for further use.  It can be used several times until it begins to change color.

For maximum benefit the packs should be applied at least three days in a row.  Next time you have pain - give castor oil packs a try.
